It is estimated that about 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 people in the U.S. & possibly 5,000,000 people in the world have a diagnosis of Lupus. Also, approximately 16,000 more Americans are diagnosed with Lupus each year, with the majority of them women. For some reason this illness affects people with Asian, Native American, & Black ancestry much more than those with Caucasian ancestry.

It is a autoimmune disease that affects various parts of the body including the skin, joints, heart, lung, blood, kidneys, and the brain.

Normally the body's immune system protects the body against viruses, bacteria, and other foreign materials. But with Lupus, the body cannot tell the difference between these foreign substances and its own cells and tissues.

The main characteristic of Lupus is inflammation. It is the primary feature of Lupus and is often shown in symptoms of pain, heat, redness, swelling, and loss of function in either the internal or external organs of the body. And often times involves both.

Many people are first diagnosed with Arthritis because of the inflammatory responses of the body to some type of disruption, whether it be from a cold, flu, or overuse of a muscle, or other inflammatory processes involved with so many things.

Many people can have different problems with Lupus. If you would like to learn more about this illness, you can find information on it here: http://www.lupus.org/
